First Day Lunch... Not So Bad
So first days anywhere are always stressful and overwhelming, and mine was no exception. Meeting 65 people in about two hours, learning global client nuances, posing for a head shot and trying to keep up (in 15 minute increments) with how my day was spent. Whew. It makes me tired just re-living it.
In most cases for a new job, your boss takes you out on your first day and aagggaaaiiinnnn, mine was no exception. My new boss, Laura, loaded me in her car for a lunch. We pull into a stripmall shopping center, which I have to say, usually doesn't bode well unless it's Chinese food. We walk up to this place called Solomon's. The restaurant is set back in a nook, and uses its sidewalk space as a small patio so you can't really tell you are in a shopping center.
Walking in, it smells heavenly--roasted vegetables, baking bread, toasted spices. For lunch, you order at the hostess counter and then they serve you (but for dinner, it is a sit-down affair). The menu is pretty substantial for lunch, but I have a small obsession with really good falafel. So of course, I order the carb-overload plate--a falafel pita with fries. Aside from the fact that a wrapped falafel pita, rather than a stuffed falafel pita, is incredibly hard to eat, it was pretty tasty.
The falafel was nicely formed and cooked, but a little dense for my taste. It felt more like I was eating a donut hole, as far as consistency. The tahini paste was almost flavorless. I gave up on it after a few minutes and just ate the falafel and pita, which was yummy by itself. Now, the fries were the best part. They were crispy and heavily seasoned... just the way I like them. I left some pita... there were only crispy crumbs left on the fries.
Laura got the French Onion soup and the gyro pita. If you missed my last post on gyro meat making, you should definitely check it out. It's pretty cool. This is one of Laura's favorite places to eat and she is obsessed with the gyro meat here. I didn't taste it, but she LOVES it, so definitely give it a shot.
It pretty much took us our entire lunch hour to consume the large portions of food you get (for a very reasonable price, I might add). So we ate and ran.
All in all, and trying to ignore my first day butterflies, I'd say this place was pretty good... not great, but pretty good. The smells were better than the food. 3.5 out of 5.
